Woman with sunglasses

Summer is almost over but that doesn’t mean you are safe from the sun’s UV rays. We’ve all heard the horror stories of not using sun screen, like burns and cancer, but we have also started to hear bad things about sunscreen! So how do we protect ourselves from the UV rays and still get to enjoy the outdoors?

No need to worry there is a way to create your very own sunscreen at home! Its healthy for you and natural for you! Before I go in how to make it, it does use zinc oxide and titanium oxide, not nonoparticles. So with that in mind, you will want to wear gloves  and a mask until it is blended as you do not want to inhale it. You will also want to have a hand mixer or mini chopper that is used specifically for this and not food.

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 8oz. Jojoba oil
  • 10oz emulsifying wax
  • Sun-blocking agent (The best I have found is “Bee Sunny SPF 35 Mineral Powder Sunscreen Zinc Oxide & Titanium”, google that and it will come up for shopping, it can even be used on its own as a powder sunblock)
  • Coconut essential oil

You will want to avoid using citrus oils like orange, bergamont, lemon or lime. They will reduce a sunscreens effectiveness and can cause some unpleasant skin reactions when exposed to the sun.

So if you decide to make your own and not use the powder above alone you will want to  basically mix it all together with a hand mixer. Once you mix it you are ready to go out into the sun and enjoy it with out the worry of harsh chemicals for your sunscreen and the effects of UV rays!
