Flea

Cold weather is coming in and now you and your pets are at risk! For what exactly? Fleas! Fleas will hitch a ride on you to get inside your home to where it is warm, they will also hitch a ride and bug the crap out of your pets! Conventional flea medication and treatments can be dangerous to you, your family and your pets health. There are some medications that are safe though. Some medications can cause terrible reactions on your pets and some treatments have some nasty chemicals in it. Even thing of when you need to bomb your house, they want you to leave your home for a few days, what makes it safe after a few days? I’m going to give you some great flea preventions and deterring tips that are completely natural!!

This method uses incense and essential oils. You will want to make sure that you can do this all at once, as it is more effective this way.  First you will want to bathe your pet, with an essential oil infusion. To make this you will want to boil a cup of almond oil with 1 tsp dried rosemary and 1 tsp on dried lavender for about 10 minutes or until the herbs look like they are pale and dry. Once the herbs are to this point you will want to go ahead and drain the herbs from the oil, you can put the used herbs in your composter. You will want to take the fresh infused oil and mix it with a bottle of unscented baby shampoo. Then you are ready to give your pet a bath, make sure you rub it in gently as this combination should kill the eggs and the fleas.  You will also want to comb your pets hair to get any of the dead fleas and eggs out of their hair when finished bathing.  If you want to use a ready made Natural Flea Control click here.

To get rid of them in your house is just as easy. Something simple that we all have in our house, Rubbing alcohol! This isn’t just alcohol that works though, it is an infusion!  You put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and add some essential oils. The essential oils you want to add are 1tsp of chamomile, 1 tsp Valerian, 1 tsp witch hazel,  and 1 tsp liquorice. If you don’t have these essential oils, you can check out this post to learn how to make them, you dont have to follow their scents since you are making it for fleas, just the process.  Or you can put the dried herbs in baby oil and shake the bottle as fast and as hard as you can to mix them. Then put a tsp of each in the rubbing alcohol. Once this is created spray your furniture or any low hanging fabric and carpeted areas with this spray. With anything new, make sure that you test a small spot first to make sure you don’t have any fabric reactions.

At this point you will want get some eucalyptus, lavender and/or orange incense sticks and put them in holders around the house. You will want to place them in the holders that you can lay them down in so the ashes don’t get all over your carpet. Find something to keep the incense 4″ off of the ground/carpet and stagger them around the room evenly. Fleas, just like us need fresh air to survive and by lighting the incense you are cutting the supply of fresh air off and they will jump for fresh air. When incense is burned the smoke will also have oils when burned. These specific scents cause irritation to the fleas when they jump into the smoke to get fresh air. I’ve found that the best sticks to use for this are about a 1/4″ thick and 18″ long. Again, you will want to keep these 4″ off the floor and keep your eye on them as they are a burning wick.

The purpose of spraying your furniture with the alcohol mixture is because when they are searching for fresh air they will be trying to get up higher and the alcohol mixture actually kills fleas!

Hope this helps people who have fleas and are worried about conventional chemicals for their family! If you have any great ideas for fleas feel free to share!
